I was desperately needing something new to hang my nice jewlery on. I figured it really wasn't good for my nice necklaces to have them thrown into a drawer in my jewelry box. My sister got something similar to this project and paid $15 dollars for it. I have less than $5 invested in my JEWELRY FRAME!! It was super easy and fun to make!
Want one for yourself?? Here's how to do it...
First, get a cheap picture frame. I would recommend 8x10 or larger. I got mine at Hobby Lobby (because I love HL and they have clearance stuff marked down 80% off right now. I got this frame for like $3! You don't need the glass part so you can take that out or try to find a frame with the glass broken for even cheaper. Take the frame apart into the actual frame part, glass, and back piece.
Then, sand it down if it needs it, to prepare it to be painted. You might have a picture frame that you like as is, and if so you can skip these steps. I had to sand and paint mine.
First, I painted a thin layer of brown paint.
Then, I covered the brown with about 5 coats of white. You want it to be pretty solidly covered with no brown peeking through.
While your paint is drying you can get the inside ready. While I was at HL, I picked up two pieces of foam board. This stuff is really cheap (79 cents each) and in the kid's craft section.
Cut your piece of foam board to the exact size of the back piece of the picture frame.
The kind of foam board I bought had a sticky back, so pull off the paper on the back and stick it to the back piece of the picture frame. If your foam doesn't have sticky, you can always hot glue it. Please ignore my unpainted fingernails!
I then took my second piece of foam board and stuck it to the first. Now, my foam was 2 layers thick.
I found some material that I liked (and that also matched my room) and hot glued that onto the top piece of foam board.
By now your paint should be relatively dry. If not, let it sit some more. Go read a book or watch a movie...oh wait I must be dreaming...I meant clean up a spill or change a diaper!
Once it's dry, use your sand paper again to antique the frame. Just lightly go over the white paint and the brown paint should start peeking through. Remember to do this slowly and gently. You can always sand more, but you don't want to have to repaint the white!
Once you get it antiqued to the amount you want it, Modge Podge over it. This step is not necessary, but will give your frame a more finished, shiny look.
Once it has dried, put your cloth covered foam board attached to the back piece back in the frame. Stick some straight pins into the foam board to hang your jewlry from and enjoy!!!!
This is the final product sitting on my dresser next to my earring holder that my sister made me for Christmas! I think these two are going to be great hanging on the wall next to eachother!!

super cute!
